Frequently Asked Questions
-
Thorns & All Counseling is a psychotherapy practice grounded in the belief that healing does not require becoming a different person. We make room for the whole person: the beautiful, complicated, contradictory, resilient, and sometimes messy parts.
Our work is thoughtful, collaborative, and depth-oriented, with attention to meaning, emotion, relationships, patterns, and the connection between mind and body.
In other words: you are welcome here, thorns and all.
-
You don't need to have a particular diagnosis—or even know exactly what's wrong—to begin therapy.
People may seek therapy for concerns such as:
Anxiety, stress, and overwhelm
Depression or feeling emotionally stuck
Relationship difficulties
Life transitions
Identity and self-understanding
Grief and loss
Perfectionism and self-criticism
Emotional suppression or difficulty accessing feelings
Boundary and people-pleasing patterns
Meaning, purpose, and existential concerns
Spirituality or religious exploration
Repeating patterns that you understand intellectually but haven't been able to change
Sometimes the starting point is simply: “I know something needs to change.”
That's enough.
-
Therapy at Thorns & All is not intended to feel like someone sitting across from you with a clipboard telling you how to live your life.
Our approach is relational, integrative, curious, and collaborative.
Depending on your needs, therapy may incorporate insight-oriented work, cognitive and behavioral strategies, attachment and relational perspectives, existential exploration, mindfulness, emotional processing, and somatic awareness.
There may be practical skills and concrete interventions. There may also be sessions spent slowing down and understanding something more deeply.
The goal isn't simply symptom reduction. It's helping you understand yourself well enough to create meaningful and sustainable change.
-

The therapist's role is not to tell you what to believe, but to help you explore what you believe and what those beliefs mean for your life.
-
Heck, no! Therapy isn't a place where you have to perform being healthy, insightful, agreeable, productive, or put together.
You can bring the things you're proud of.
You can also bring the jealousy, anger, shame, resentment, contradictions, strange thoughts, old wounds, embarrassing stories, uncertainty, and parts of yourself you're still trying to understand.
Curiosity tends to get us further than judgment.
-
The first session is an opportunity for us to begin understanding what brings you to therapy and what you hope might change.
We'll discuss relevant history, current concerns, relationships, strengths, previous experiences with therapy, and potential goals.
You don't need to arrive with your life story organized.
We'll figure out where to begin together.
-
You may appreciate working with Thorns & All if you're looking for therapy that balances depth with practicality, curiosity with accountability, and acceptance with change.
You don't have to know immediately whether the relationship is right. The first few sessions give both of us an opportunity to determine whether the approach fits what you need.
If another clinician or service would better support you, appropriate referrals may be discussed.
